Jose Rizal in Chicago

Jose Rizal by Juan Luna

As we celebrate Jose Rizal's 118th Death Anniversary on December 30, let me just share this photo... Rizal really did visit Chicago during his American Tour but I don't think Wrigley Field was already built at that time.

Jose Rizal had his American tour in 1888. He missed the World's Columbian Exposition which was held in the city by 5 years. It would have been memorable for him coming from a Spanish colony.

Weeghman Park was built in 1914 and dedicated to America's favorite pastime, Baseball. When Chewing gum magnate, William Wrigley Jr., bought the Chicago Cubs in 1921, it paved the way for the park to be named after him.

It would have been great if Rizal was able to watch a baseball game when he was conducting his American tour but there was no mention in his letters or journal.

Jose Rizal is the Philippine's National Hero. He lived during the latter part of the Spanish colonization of the Philippines (1861-1896).
