Signs of the Times: Cebu Version

One Saturday afternoon, I was walking around the Midtown area of Cebu City when I found myself smiling at some of the billboard and store signs that I saw.

I couldn't help but marvel at how creative Filipinos are especially in making unique and eye-catching signs. Word play and Filipino ingenuity are the perfect combination.

I remember that a few years ago, there was a book that came out with a compilation of funny Filipino signs.

I'll be withdrawing 1 liter of water

Cebuano entrepreneurs' imagination are on a high-level to attract customers to their establishments. It also doesn't help that when you register your business name with the Department of Trade and Industry it has to be as original as possible.

When I first visited Cebu in the 2000's, MyJoy was still known as McJoy but they became involved in a legal battle with McDonald's because of the play of words.

A hundred years from now, what would the future Filipinos learn about 21st century Pinoy culture just by looking at these funny signs?

Humor is a coping mechanism for majority of us. We make fun of other people, heck, we make fun of ourselves as well.

It has been tested and proven by Filipinos that laughter is indeed the best medicine.

Here are some of those signs that made me enjoy that Saturday afternoon walk.

Have you seen any of these?

So personal!

That's how serious they are in cutting your hair.

Buti pa dito may forever. They'll wash your clothes with Love and Passion!

Is this a candy store or a laundry service? It's the Willy Wonka of Laundry Shops.

Is there a Goodbye Spa!?! I think Adele or Lionel Richie would like to have a massage here.

I'm not sure if this is a Hair Museum or a Beauty Salon. Maybe they display different wigs here.

You'll never go wrong with this tailor.

Extra rice, anyone?

You'll never have a bad day with this car wash
